This was the last day of the tour, and people had flights home at diverse times.
Mine was late in the day, so I got to go on a tour of old town Quito, the
botanical gardens, and Iñaquito Market.
We had police escorts for all tour activities in Quito. A comparison of crime
data shows it is higher in Quito than in Boston, New York, or Rome, but I did
not get bad vibes from the city. They do have issues with criminal organizations
and I suppose want to protect their tourism industry by protecting tourists.
(Our trip leader was very good, but he made a couple of tactical errors. One was
talking about crime and cartels, thus calling attention to danger, instead of
simply saying the police were there to add security, presenting it as a good
thing. Another was talking about how the tour could have been 7-8 days with
different planning instead of just talking about a great 6 days coming up.)
