Another flight day, the second of three in a row (Cusco to Lima to Quito to the
Galápagos Islands). We got up early, went to the airport, and flew from Lima to
Quito. I had the presence of mind to jump from the airplane onto the stairs,
meaning I have jumped off an airplane at 7880 feet with no parachute.
From the airport, we immediately headed for the equator while our luggage went
to the hotel. The first stop was a restaurant at the edge of a volcano crater in
which some people have settled. Then we went to Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, which is
some land with a monument to mark the equator and shopping for tourists. The
equator is actually about 240 meters north of the monument.
There were three chocolates stores among the tourist shops, a satisfactory
ratio. Only two are pictured below.
Then we returned to Quito, where I visited Mooié Chocolatería Fina, happily
just three blocks from our hotel.
My initial impression was that Ecuador is nicer than Peru. The food we had was
fresher, better prepared, and more interesting. The street traffic was
reaonable, not insane. On the other hand, the hotel was vibrating. The scale I
use to record chocolate weights would not settle.
