The group tour started in late morning, so I had some time to explore on my own.
However, the hotel was in the financial district with a bit of retail, so not
much of cultural interest to see. I did walk through one store that looked like
a grocery store from the front, and it also had various home goods and clothes,
much like a Target.
The group activities began with an official welcome (to the main tour; the
Amazon was a pre-trip extension) and orientation meeting.
After the meeting, we had a tour that explored a bit of the city center, Santo
Domingo Church, and the Lima art museum, Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI). Dinner at
the hotel restaurant was very good, and the rest of the hotel, the Westin Lima
Hotel & Convention Center, was very good. My room had a walk-in closet. This
trip used “luxury” hotels, which were fine, but I generally do not get a lot
from fancy hotels, and, on this trip, we were moving so much we could not enjoy
the hotels much anyway. However, this one was my favorite of the trip, and the
only one I might choose to use again.
In Lima, I generally saw less English posted, even in tourist attractions, than
in other foreign destinations I have visited. We learned the word “playa” is
used to label parking lots even though it means “beach.”
