I joined the tour group, and we flew to Iquitos, which is the largest city in the world (about half a million residents) that is not on an island yet cannot be reached by road. We just rode a van through the city to a dock, so my only pictures are from the van. A common vehicle in the city is a motokar, which is essentially a motorized tricycle with a bench seat for passengers. We saw one with a passenger with an in-box 50" TV as cargo.

Then we boarded a small covered boat for a trip on the Amazon to Ceiba Tops Lodge. A box lunch was distributed on the boat. It included some ñuto cookies, which you can see below. I found a recipe online and tried to reproduce them, but I did not quite get the crunchy outside with the powdery inside.

The lodge is comfortable, with running water, electricity, and cell service. There was Wi-Fi too but only in the main building. The jacuzzi, water slide, pool, and gym were unexpected extras. Initial impression of the Amazon rainforest compared to the Mount Monadnock parking lot in early summer: Fewer flying insects, better cellular service.

After settling in, there was a walk through the neighboring rainforest.
